Child and Adolescent
Children and adolescents often face specific mental health issues as they define their identity in the world. For some, these issues are tied to mental health disorders that affect how they think, feel, and relate to others.
According to some estimates, one in ten children in the U.S. suffers from a mental health disorder that can interfere with healthy and normal development. Conditions like depression can manifest differently in children and teens than in adults. Some conditions, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or eating disorders, may be more prevalent in young people or require specific treatment approaches.
Treatment for some of these conditions may require medication. Psychotherapy with a professional who has experience dealing with these issues can be extremely helpful. Depending on the young person's needs and preferences, therapy may involve a group, the entire family, one-on-one sessions, collateral sessions with parents, or some combination of the three.
